I was born in Vancouver Canada to English parents and have one older sister. At the age of 9, I moved to England with my family and lived there for 6 years before moving to southwest Florida with my parents. On Marco Island, I met my husband Chris and we have been married for 30 years. Chris and I live in Naples with our furry 4 legged feline children.
I volunteered at the Conservancy of Naples for 16 years from 1984 till 2000. I did not volunteer anywhere for a number of years after that as I was looking for the “right organization.” When I happened upon Jim and Jan, founders of For the Love of Cats, at Petsmart for their weekly adoption event one weekend – I realized this was the right organization for me.
There comes a time in one’s life when your purpose for being here on earth hits you straight between the eyes. Volunteering at For The Love Of Cats has made me realize that. I have used the communication skills acquired through my membership in Toastmasters to help educate others in the importance of spaying/neutering the cats in our homes and outdoor colonies and to spread the word of the wonderful work that For the Love of Cats provides to our community.
Jim and Jan run a wonderful shelter and I have learned so much these last four years. When volunteering here, you get the satisfaction of knowing that the cats and kittens that come through will be placed into loving forever homes. It’s not just about volunteering at the shelter, working with cats ranging in age from new born to seniors, but to also have the chance to work at outside events such as the farmers market and other fundraising activities. I’ve met so many wonderful people who have the same passion about something that I do and together we are making a difference.
